All You Want for Christmas Is Your Two Front Teeth

December 20, 2010

As the holiday approaches you might be tempted to rush the process of getting your new crown. Yes, we can send them to the lab and ask for a rush, but do you really want to live the rest of your life with crowns that were rushed?  I wouldn’t.

Several things to consider when planning your new front crowns:

1) Do you want all porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal? One is stronger and can mask the underlying shade of the tooth better while the other allows light to penetrate and is more natural looking.

2) Do you want to whiten your teeth before you start this process? If so, you need to allow two weeks for the shade to stabilize before choosing a shade for your new crowns.  Remember, porcelain doesn’t bleach so you will need to achieve the shade you want before you have your new crowns done.

3)Do you want a custom shade?  This involves going to the lab and having the ceramist make notes about the shade and characteristics of the surrounding teeth in order to custom design your new crowns.  Yes there is a fee for that, but it also guarantees that the shade will be correct.

The most difficult thing in dentistry is to get an exact match with a single front crown. Considering all your options and making an informed and well thought out decision before you proceed is crucial.  So you don’t get them by Christmas; is it really that critical in the long run?
