Did you know that roughly 30 to 40 million Americans today suffer from dental phobia? The majority of people who have this fear say it is the drills and needles that scare them the most. What these people do not know is that many dentists today are using sedation dentistry to help patients get the oral care they need.
There are three kinds of sedation dentistry that can be used for patients suffering from dental phobia:
- Oral Sedation – With oral sedation, a pill is taken prior to the procedure. Once the medication kicks in the patient will remain awake during the procedure, but will be less anxious.
- Inhalation Sedation – Nitrous Oxide, also known as laughing gas, is used for inhalation sedation. This form of sedation dentistry is safe for patients of all ages, and is often used in pediatric dentistry. The nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask that is placed over the nose and remains in place throughout the procedure.
- IV Sedation – IV Sedation is fast and painless, yet safe and effective. Patients will not be aware of what is happening throughout the procedure and will most likely not remember anything afterward. This is often reserved for more serious procedures, such as removing wisdom teeth.
Sedation dentistry not only calms and relaxes you, it also reduces your sense of pain and helps you to get the care you need without added stress and anxiety. Some patients relate the sedation to feelings of relaxation or a feeling of comfortable calmness.
