Foods to Avoid if You Want a Whiter Smile

March 13, 2013

Whiter SmileTeeth whitening is an extremely popular cosmetic dental treatment these days for Richardson, TX residents, and the results can be pretty amazing. Unfortunately teeth will eventually return to their natural color unless the process is regularly repeated, but paying a bit more attention to the foods you eat can help make the effects last a little longer, leaving you with a whiter smile.

Drinks to Avoid for a Whiter Smile

Top of the list of drinks has to be tea and coffee. These are both well known for their staining qualities, but are often pretty difficult to give up. The second worst drink is probably red wine, as the tannins will stain your teeth. In fact, the effects are often easy to see simply by sticking out your tongue after a enjoying a glass of full-bodied red. The next drink on the list is white wine. The reason for this is simply its high acidity that can soften tooth enamel, leaving it more susceptible to tooth staining from other foods. Sodas and diet drinks are also pretty bad, as sodas tend to be full of tooth damaging sugars and are often high colored, while diet drinks often contain large amounts of enamel softening acid.

Foods to Avoid for a Whiter Smile

The list of foods is also pretty extensive. Perhaps the worst offenders are berries. High in anti-oxidants, there is little doubt that berries are frequently on the list of super foods. While your body may love them, your white smile certainly won’t. Next up are tomato based sauces. These tend to be many people’s top choice as they can be lower in fat and are known for being healthy. Curry sauces are just as bad, although they are a tasty treat that can be difficult to resist.

Tips for Lessening the Effects of these Foods

If you like to drink tea then try switching to green or white tea, as this can actually help improve your dental health which will give you whiter smile. If you really can’t live without your cup of Joe, then dilute it with milk. This will help to make it slightly less staining, and you’ll benefit from the extra calcium. White wine can be made into a spritzer to lessen its acidity, or you could try drinking white or red wine through a straw to minimize the contact with your teeth. The same thing goes for sodas and diet drinks.

Nobody wants to miss out on luscious summer berries, so try rinsing your mouth regularly with water when enjoying this tasty treat. The same trick can help with those highly colored sauces, or you could try switching to cream based sauces that aren’t quite so staining.

It is probably best to enjoy everything in moderation to ensure you have a balanced and healthy diet. Teeth whitening treatments can be retouched regularly but make sure not to overdo the bleaching as this could damage your teeth and gums.
