What is a Pulp Chamber and Why Do I Need to Treat It?

November 30, 2010

Did Dr. Goad tell you “if the tooth remains problematic we can treat the pulp chamber”?  Let me decode that message.  You need a root canal.

First of all, calm down!  Root canals have gotten a bad rap over the years.  I can honestly say that in my 20 years of dentistry I have only pried one or two patients off of the ceiling.  Just kidding!

Maybe it would help if you understood the steps involved.

1)  We get the tooth numb.  This is a crucial step and one that we use a special anesthetic for that lasts much longer than the anesthetic used for other procedures.

2)  We open the tooth and clean out the roots of the tooth where the nerve (pulp chamber) is located.  No, we do not take your roots out.  Think about it: no roots would mean the tooth would fall out!

3)  We fill in the now empty roots and seal the tooth.

Yes, it is just that easy.  Honestly, most people are very surprised at how pain free and, well, boring root canals really are.

You can now go on with your life and forget about the tooth.  It is now just one of the gang and can be brushed, flossed and used like all the others.  The only difference is it doesn’t hurt any more!
