THE FIRST SETTLERS to the Richardson, Texas area came from Kentucky and Tennessee in the 1840s. Post Civil War, a railroad was built northwest of the original settlement, shifting the village’s center closer to the railroad. Richardson was named after Alfred S. Richardson, the secretary of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad.

In 1873 there was only a post office, general store, and drug store. In 1908, an electric railway was built to connect Richardson to Denison and other surrounding areas. The population of the city gradually rose to about 600 people.

As more and more infrastructure was completed, the population continued to rise. In 1954, the central expressway was opened, and shopping centers began popping up all over the city. Richardson’s police department was opened in 1955.

The community focused a lot on education and built a center for advanced studies, later renamed The University of Texas at Dallas in 1969. Approximately 32,000 students quickly enrolled. The city continued to grow, and many people chose to set up their businesses in Richardson. The city has since then been known for its economic stability and employability.
